Program Components: Communities of Color

African-Americans make up 32% of Louisiana’s population; we have the second largest percentage of African-American smokers in the nation. Tobacco-related deaths and diseases affect communities of color almost twice as much as other communities.

The Communities of Color Network (CoC) provides support and technical assistance to ensure that members of our African-American communities are well-informed about the dangers of tobacco, and that these communities are prepared to take action to protect themselves from unhealthy exposure.

The mission of the CoC is to eliminate health inequalities caused by or related to tobacco use among Louisiana communities of color by building coalitions, increasing awareness of the dangers of tobacco, and reducing tobacco consumption and secondhand smoke exposure.

For more information on the Communities of Color Network, and how you can get involved, please visit the CoC website housed by Southern University Agricultural and Research Center.
