The Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco-Free Living Calls “Time Out” on Secondhand Smoke

New Orleans, December 27, 2004 As LSU heads to Orlando for the Capital One Bowl, the Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco-Free Living (TFL) and members of the LSU cheerleading squad are teaming up in a television commercial that champions viewers to make a resolution to speak out against secondhand smoke. Secondhand smoke poisons everyone it touches, says Dr. Tom Houston, executive director of the Louisiana Campaign For Tobacco-Free Living. If you know someone who smokes, or if you yourself smoke, make your New Years resolution to live smoke-free in 2005.
TFL urges Louisianans to champion smoke-free environments all around them in their cars, homes and workplaces. Start with bowl-watching parties. When youre inviting your friends and family over to watch LSU play, ask them not to smoke inside, especially not around your children. Going smoke-free is a win for everyone smokers and nonsmokers alike, says Houston.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), secondhand smoke contains more than 4,000 chemicals, 200 poisons and 69 carcinogens. Secondhand smoke is considered a Class A carcinogen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency the same category as asbestos, benzene and radon gas. It is the leading cause of preventable death in the country, killing 53,000 nonsmokers in the U.S. each year by causing heart disease and cancer. Secondhand smoke can also compromise an otherwise healthy pregnancy.
The Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco-Free Living provides statewide coordination of existing tobacco control initiatives, funds innovative community programming for tobacco control, and develops statewide media campaigns to help reduce the excessive burden of tobacco use on the states resources and improve Louisianas overall health and quality of life.
Tobacco Fact: Secondhand smoke contains more than 4,000 chemicals, 69 of which cause cancer. The air in smoke-filled rooms contains 6 times more carbon monoxide than you would inhale standing in the middle of the busiest freeway during rush hour. Among those dangerous substances are formaldehyde, cyanide, arsenic, sulfur dioxide, ammonia, benzene, tar and radioactive polonium-210.
