YTS
TFL tracks tobacco use and related issues among youth using the Youth Tobacco Survey (YTS), a classroom-based survey of students in grades 6th through 12th.
YTS provides an assessment of tobacco-related knowledge, attitudes and behaviors of middle and high school students to assist the state in improving the youth tobacco prevention and cessation activities and evaluating their effects.
The survey is administered to randomly chosen classrooms and all are anonymous and confidential. All students in selected classrooms are eligible for participation.
Core topics addressed by the YTS include revalence of cigarette smoking and other tobacco use among young people, knowledge and attitudes of young people towards smoking, access to cigarettes, tobacco-related school curriculum, media Influence, secondhand smoke and cessation of cigarette smoking.
TFL is working to administer the Youth Tobacco Survey in Louisiana for the first time during the 2007-2008 school years, in partnership with the Louisiana Department of Education, Office of Public Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
